Hello,

This is just a friendly reminder to all middlemen (and women!) that you should carefully read through and check the messages you get sent onsite requesting to verify your identity. Although they may all look innocent at face value, if you're going through them quickly, it's very easy to slip up and fall into the following situation(s):

Situation 1:

Account X (scammer's personal account) adds you on discord and asks for you to middleman a deal. You accept and are then asked to verify your identity onsite. You receive a PM on MCM from the scammer's MCM profile with a screenshot of your conversation up to that point, and a request to confirm your identity. You then quickly scan through, the messages match up, and of course; you're yourself, so you reply with something like "Yes, you are dealing with me on discord".

What's the problem here? A crafty enough scammer can use a fake/impersonator discord account and recreate the conversation they're having with you in the DMs with the fake account. Then, they'd receive your confirmation that you quickly looked over and saw as matching, and create a group with themselves, the fake impersonator MM account, and a buyer (or their own alt, again). Then, they could fake a conversation with the impersonator's account and make it seem as if you scammed them, and since you verified you were dealing with them onsite, it could create for an uncomfortable situation or even lead to a ban in a SR.

What's the solution? Make sure to always include your discord ID (not username) in the verification response message in MCM DMs. That way, you wouldn't be susceptible to this type of scam and it'd make verifications even more certain. Use this post from discord to find out how to do so if you're not sure. A sample message with it could look like this: "Yes, I am currently speaking with you on discord and my ID is 211501895766900736".

I know this may seem obvious for lots of you out there, but hopefully there's someone out there who can benefit from this writeup. Feel free to PM me/comment below with any other additions that you think'd be useful for this type of thread.

This concludes my Ted(x) talk.
