Question: 1.7 and 1.8 or just 1.8 for a server?

Hello MC-Market, I am releasing my server RobustMC soon and I have been making the setup so far on the spigot protocol hack jar (server allows both 1.7 and 1.8 clients to join) and I was wondering which version is better for my server in the long run. The protocol hack or just 1.8? 1.8 has more features so I am leaning towards changing my server to that.

Why not just go to 1.8.7+? Why use the protocol hacked jar?

Anybody who runs a server that's any version OTHER than the latest, is more or less just purposely pushing away players.
Sure there will be some that change versions for your server, and some maybe like that version, but a majority of people update Minecraft when a new version comes out, and they never go back.

It's a mix of laziness and lack of know-how.

The more updates that come out, the less players will stay on those old, outdated 1.7-1.8 servers.

Also adding to the information above, The "hack" jar file removes all 1.8 Items/Blocks and certain plugins won't have some features because you can't download the latest 1.8.8 Update, as it will not work.

Yes I know, I am going to go with a 1.8.x jar instead of the hack I am currently using.

Really? Because a lot of servers are 1.8 only that are factions.

Most servers are upgrading to 1.8. 1.8 allows for more bug fixes, and lots of plugins have been starting to drop support for 1.7. However you could also use the Protocol Hack as stated above.

I chose 1.8, I just finished updated my server's plugins to it

Use 1.8. We used to use 1.7/1.8 for a while, but we later on decided to update to a full 1.8 build. It's been a very long time into 1.8 now, I recommend that you update your server to 1.8.
