If you opt for the 6700k, you'll still be able to run modpacks just fine. The graphics end of things (shaders and such) are typically dependent on your GPU rather than the CPU. But since we're on CPU's, yes, the 6700k is sufficient for your needs (more than enough in fact). With the good clock-speed and the cores, you'll be able to run modpacks easily.

If you are only playing mc 6700k is great. But if you aren't overclocking it no point in getting the 6700k. The 6700 would just do the same, you would also save money. If you want the 8700k still, but you don't overclock just get the 8700.

Overall if you aren't overclocking dont get anything with a "k". If you are just playing mc and some other games 6700 would be fine. If you are doing video editing in the furture the 8700 would be the best pick. Hope I helped

The amount you save with a non k is hardly anything..

I can grab a used 6700k for 250. Thats why I'm asking, because the 8700k is 450. So I was wondering if it was worth stepping down.
The 8700k is a huge step up in performance, you would almost get the same out of a newest gen i5 as the 6700k[DOUBLEPOST=1533187650][/DOUBLEPOST]Actually you might get better performance with a 8500k over a 6700k

So lets say I run a modpack with 200 heavy mods. Do you think we are talking a 40 fps for the 6700k and 120 for the 8700k? I know you aren't a pro haha, just curious what you think.
No lmao, the difference would be in the 10-20%

Yah see thats what i was thinking. So it didn't seem worth the 200$ more price tag. Of course for selling it's smarter for the 8700k but on the other hand, 250 would depreciate to 100 whereas 450 would depreciate to 300 so am i really loosing aside of performance, when it comes to mc. I looked on user benchmark and it shot up the workstation % but barely gaming or the other category.

Don't buy used. And since you aren't overclocking there isn't a point in getting the k it makes 0 difference. save the extra 50$.

Things with cpus:
  • Buy from intel for longer use and to not have a fried processor after 2 years.
  • ALWAYS BUY LATEST VERSION! (Or the one below)
  • Don’t buy used
  • Don’t buy used from ebay
  • Don’t buy used for deep web
  • Just don’t buy used
  • Minecraft is run of java, so basically you’ll never fry your cpu, and 4 cores and 6 cores difference is basically everything.

Ryzen CPU's are a lot better now, to say they all fry after 2 years isn't true, I have an 8350 (old amd chip) my friend now uses and its nearing 6 years of use.

But the base clock is 3.2 for the 8600 with the turbo to 4.3. How is that better then a base clock of 4.0 with a turbo of 4.2?[DOUBLEPOST=1533272625][/DOUBLEPOST]Oh wow, according to user benchmark it's 6% better to get the i5 haha With a 50$ more price tag tho..

I can't believe no one else mentioned this, but Minecraft only uses 1 core. So your FPS is dependent on how powerful that 1 core is.
Now if you're only going to play Minecraft, 6700k is perfectly fine. 8700k will be better, but not by much and not worth the extra amount you'd have to pay.
But then again, if you're going to play other games and do a lot more on your PC, it's better to go with 8700k since it's newer, and has much better optimization.
Only go with the 8700k if all you're other parts are higher end too since you don't want to bottleneck it.
