Hey!
Everyone has their own preferences, but the most common programs being used for design are Adobe's suite and Affinity Designer + Photo.
For me, depending on the job, any of the ones shown below. Haven't had any work with typesetting, so InDesign isn't on that list just yet.

I prefer Affinity Designer over Illustrator for basically any kind of vector work because of its performance and stability. The smart guides are orders of magnitude better than Illustrators too.

Affinity Designer is 55€ - the closest to free from any program being used by professionals for design.
If you can't spend that amount, just pirate Adobe's stuff. It's literally part of their business plan.
