Hi there! I was wondering if I could get some feedback from some other minecraft server owners? or even staff on servers.

I am curious as to whether or not you pay your helpers, mods, admins - do you offer real money, coupons for the donation shop or in game items? If you are a staff on a server, what does your server do?

I have been staff on many servers and I find it varies - some servers did nothing, others gave us coupons for the donation shop and a few others had a special in game kit for staff.

I was thinking of a doing an in game monthly kit for my helpers and mods.

At the moment, I just give staff, donator rank privileges depending on their rank.

Usually, lower ranks (Helper-SrMod) are unpaid positions as they're voluntary work. And Admin is usually paid but sometimes not.

I’ve been staff on a few servers before and I currently own my own server.

I’d say it depends on your server. If it’s a stable server with steady donations I think there could be a level of expectation to get something back, especially in higher ranks like Snr Mod or Admin. Manager is usually a paid position as usually it is offered to a person (unless it’s a close friend who applies or the server is not doing well financially). If the server is not doing well in regards to players or money then I don’t think it’s reasonable to give RL money as rewards/payments.

As a personal preference, I don’t like my staff who are Mod position up playing the game on their main as there is plenty incentive to go cheat (use /fly or /gm for ex.) and even if they don’t it could cause a mess if other players accuse them of doing so. But I’d allow them to play with their alts and might give them perks or ranks or kits if they do a good job at their jobs. And I’ve never done it but sitting here I think that an exclusive discount code (say, 50% everything?) to the server store is both nice for the staff member and give small incentive to spend/donate.

It doesn’t sound like your server is very far established by your seeking help here so I’d suggest not giving RL money to your staff. At least not yet. Rather give vouchers or coupons. Or maybe an exclusive kit or item. And if you are sort of like I am now, I would give my staff exclusive cosmetic stuff (like trails or tags, etc.) so that they cannot abuse privileges, dominate markets or otherwise undermine the system or cause resentment from other players.

Just my two cents

I agree with THKlasen

I personally wouldn't be going to the effort of paying any staff lower then admin if your server isn't stable financially. In the long run, I still wouldn't pay anyone below Admin. Generally Helper-Sr.Mod is 100% a voluntary position. As soon as money is involved it requires several different personal details etc which can cause some problems, especially if you are under 18.

Overall, I would suggest to only paying Managers+ initially till the server gets a steady income. Once the server is steady financially then I would start to pay the admins, however, this wouldn't be a high pay rate.

That is from both my own opinion and my experience.
