Hello,
I'm looking for my own hardware dedicated server.

I have come across two so far.
HP BL460C G7 BLADE SERVER 2 X E5620 QUAD CORE XEONS 32GB Ram 2X E5620 32GB RAM 8X 4GB P410I 512M CACHE + FWBC £150

OR

2x 2.80GHz Hexa Xeon 32GB RAM 4X 146 10K SAS Hard Drives 1 x 460W PSU $250

If I were to buy one though what else would I need? What do I need to know etc?

Please don't trash this thread with if you don't know what your doing don't get one etc.

Thanks,

I recommend contacting Ian.D, bought a Dell r230 off of him and he for sure knows what he's doing and can get you what you need

Hello,

Those are legacy servers, if you are planning on putting those in colo, I would surely recommend getting some newer equipment. Consider getting any E3-12xxV3 or newer processor. The savings on power will pay itself back.

Hope this helps!

Why do you want to own your own hardware?

If it's because you think it's going to be cheaper, it's really not. The servers you listed are pretty low-speced. They won't be able to run any very intensive applications, especially a medium sized Minecraft server. Generally, a mid-tier VPS could out-perform some of these servers. Once you factor in the costs for colocation (usually higher for older servers because of higher power draw), shipping, remote hands, and failed hardware, you won't be getting much of a discount off just renting a dedi. You generally won't see the benefits to colocation unless you're running crazy expensive new equipment or you're running large-scale colocation where you can get bulk rates on rack space and network resources.

If you're doing it out of interest, then by all means, go ahead.

I'd recommend looking at E3 v1/v2/v3 servers, or maybe something along the lines of an E5-1620/1650 v1/v2 if you want more RAM. These run pretty cheaply on sites like eBay and will draw under 1A current @ 120V. The processors are also pretty powerful for things like VPS, web hosting, and Minecraft.

For power, hosts will usually pay between $12.50 to $20.00 per amp at 120V derated. Rackspace will usually cost $5-$10+ per U, depending on location. Add in networking and markup so that the host can profit, you'd easily be looking at $40-$50+ per month, maybe even higher depending on power, for colocation costs.

Unless you need more RAM, I wouldn't go for a v5/v6. DDR4 RAM is significantly more expensive than DDR3, so unless you're using 32+ GB, it's not very worth it. An E3-1270v2/v3 would perform quite similarly and be significantly less expensive.

Hello,

I'd for sure talk to him, just make sure to get an E3-12XXV1/v2/v3 or an E5-1620v1/v2 to avoid having to pay outrageous fees on power. I'm sure he'll give you a good deal on one of those machines, and I believe he offers some discounted colo if you go with him.

Best of luck!
