To get the server up and running, without any players.

As you didn't specify the condition, size, state or playerbase of the server, I cannot state more.
Well I plan on running 50 players max. I'm basically looking for how much RAM for a server I'm working on- would 3 GB be enough?

Assuming you have very little players, and they're not doing any resource intensive tasks. Around 4 to run it with about 10 players, and 8 for about 50 players

If I were you I would get a VPS host, you can get one from FadeHost for 20$ a month, and its 5GB of ram. That is what I use and it get very little lag, and I average 15-30 players. (you will have to buy a multicraft license however, its like 13$ for 3 servers, or 10$ for 2. :p

These people really don't know what they are talking about. It really depends on how well your server is optimized, the server's cpu and the plugins you are using. That being said, with the right optimization and cpu, you could probably get away with around 4GB.
