With the outburst of cries from server owners and the horrid EULA being enforced, many people are calling Mojang money whores. After what I just theorized, you may be right...

Mojang isn't paid by Mineplex, Hypixel, PrimeMC, etc. They're not affiliated, of course! I suspect that Mojang is only enforcing the EULA to make server owners struggle and shut down so players will then turn to Mojang's own product... Minecraft Realms. Once everyone stops playing multiplayer and goes to Realms, Mojang will be making a crap-ton of money.

Again, this is just a theory, but to me it makes sense. What do you guys think?

Lol go to realms, funny
That's the funny thing. Realms suck. But Mojang wants more money, and hosts don't pay them. They want to make Realms take over multiplayer.

What they're doing is targeting their OWN community to try and promote their own boring service, Minecraft Realms.

They don't realise it, but what they're actually doing is destroying the community that the players have made, just to try and promote and make more money for themselves.

So goes for what Notch said...:
Microsoft have no plans to change or interfere with the community aspect of what Minecraft is...

They've basically gone against everything they promised not to do. Nice one Microsoft, carry on slowly destroying what Minecraft ultimately is.

Exactly, that was my point.

Realms isn't here to replace servers, if that was the case, they wouldn't release server runners with the new updates and would probably DCMA Spigot and co. (I'm aware that happened, but that was a contributor, not Mojang.)

People are just being pissy when their EULA, something they agree to follow, is being enforced.

Really, Mojang just doesn't want to be held accountable when someone's kid buys a 500$ rank and the parent gets mad.

Dumb post. Mojang is making $25 for every account that CAN play on a multiplayer server. Servers are making literally NOTHING compared to what Mojang makes.

But they want as much money as possible. There are thousands of servers out there, and none pay Mojang. Mojang wants people to stop playing multiplayer and go to Realms, because then they'll make money.

They really don't. They have enough to pay the bills and WAY MORE.

or maybe, just maybe, they don't want a bunch of idiot children profiting off of their game (like any normal company would), are tired of getting complaints from people regarding pay to win servers, and don't want kids losing their accounts to crackers anymore. and would it really be so bad for a company to want to make money off of their own game and work? minecraft is a game created by a company. companies make money. minecraft is not a platform for a bunch of children to create businesses off of.

Doesn't mean it's legal. Selling accounts is now allowed on pretty much everything.

I had this thought the moment the EULA change was first introduced all that time ago.
However, I've since come to realize that Mojang are anything but moneywhores.
Ask yourselves this. What game has a community so focused on making money as this one?
The only thing that comes close, as far as I know, is CS:GO, with some skin traders.
Skyrim is a free modded community, where people input their content free of charge. I believe it isn't even allowed to ask money for it.

For years, minecraft grew explosively because of its infinite diversity. There were as many different gamemodes as in Garry's mod, and it was so very easy to create your own.
it didn't take long before people realized a profit could be made. This website is the final form of that. I don't mind it existing, and have made extensive use of it. However, Mojang have decided that needing to pay 20 bucks per server to even stand a chance of competing with other players has gone on long enough. I really don't blame them.

At this point, there were 2 paths to take.
Either continue as they were, and let the monetary community take over, ending in a situation where playing on a server would cost a fortune.
Or to start enforcing, filtering out those servers and corners of the community most geared toward making money above all else.
that means those businesses that add little to the 'creative community' as I'm sure they see it, and those that break the EULA in the more obvious ways.
It does not mean they intend to shut down the server system
Nor do they intend for Realms to compete with large servers. Realms is meant for a small group of friends. A realm can't even handle more advanced redstone-based maps.
it is, however, an easy alternative for those younger ones (and I mean below 12) who don't have the knack or the desire to actually run their own server, but want to play online with their friends still, on a world where they won't need to worry about being griefed by some ass, or constantly targeted by players in max enchant diamond armor.

Mojang knows that without the big servers, and the entire community around them, minecraft would start shrinking a little again.
They're not looking to compete with that, not directly.
But they are trying to rein in the more extreme parts.
