Hey MC-Market! You must have been dying to know what has happened with the past couple of days.

Update
MC-Market was set for an update on Xenforo for less than a day. However, we have experienced issues which prevented us from finishing the update within one day; which instead took three days.

With the first day and a half, we had experienced heavy DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) which made us come to a conclusion of changing hosts.

As we were changing hosts, Mick with a different timezone was sleeping as the transfer was complete. This took up two days which leads us to our third day.

Mick had to take care of personal business, which then he left the update to be handled with tjrgg. With that being said, MC-Market has updated successfully, but with a few bugs that has occurred along the way.

Bugs Information
As we upgraded the forum, this allowed us to fix the current bugs.

This upgrade allows us to fix the following:
  • TFA: Two Factor Authentication, this will allow Premium members and above have a double security layer. If someone else obtains your password and attempts to login, they will be asked for a code that is sent to your mobile.
We have fixed the issue with two-step verification for only "Email Confirmation", we are still trying to resolve "Verification Code via App"
  • Signature: You are currently unable to use pictures or see them at this moment. *FIXED*
  • Theme: Users cannot switch to a dark theme. *FIXED*
  • and a few more.
With the update of xenforo, we can fix the current and any upcoming issues.

We understand that most of you are very upset as no one was notified and we are very sorry for what has happen. We do not have any upcoming maintenance at this moment, so rest assured any future updates should not take longer than 3 days without a valid reason.

Rest assured, any update we do will be alerted 1-3 days before.

Thank you very much for reading, and be sure you participate in our contest!

Alright, I might as well share my side of the story.

a) An upgrade to XenForo isn't actually that difficult. The entire process would have been maybe 5 minutes, if that. Mick could have done this easily and that's exactly what he was doing. I didn't even know he was doing it at the time. It wasn't until he ran into some errors that I found out about it. I assume he only came to me because I was the only one online at the time.

b) Once Mick approached me with the errors, I guided him on how to resolve them. However, it eventually became clear that there was an issue that was overlooked. Mick and I spent hours trying to diagnose the problem. During this time, the mistake of turning CloudFlare off was made, exposing our server's IP, which left us vulnerable to DDoS attacks. So, when we finally found the problem and were getting somewhere, we weren't able to do anything because we were DDoSed. Unfortunately, this caused a long delay in getting the site back up.

c) Eventually, the DDoS attack subsided and we were able to proceed with getting the site back up and upgraded, as was intended. Due to Mick having to head off for personal reasons, he asked me to perform the upgrade and get the site back up, which I was happy to do.

d) After I completed the upgrade and Mick returned, he took steps to have the IP of our server changed to close the vulnerability of being DDoSed.

Keep in mind that this whole operation was planned, but it was not expected to take as long as did. It was suppose to be something really quick. Perhaps an announcement should have been made, but just like the rest of you, I was unaware that Mick had decided to upgrade until he was actually doing it. I was probably the first to learn of this, but again, I was the only staff member online at the time.

Were mistakes made? Sure they were. But what do you do? We're all human and we can only be human. Humans make mistakes. Do I think this whole situation could have been handled better? Sure I do. But again, what do you do? What was done was done and we aren't able to change what happened, as it happened. All we can do now is learn from this and take steps to prevent it from happening again.

Well, thank you for clearing that up. It makes it a lot easier to understand what happened, and understanding breeds empathy, as the saying goes. I'd say all reasonable effort was made to get the site back up as quickly as possible.

Still, for future reference, even if an update was planned to only take 5 minutes, we would all appreciate it if at least a minimal effort could be made to notify us a few hours beforehand so we can get everything settled in case something goes wrong. A minimal effort would be something like a post in this section of the forums that notifies of updates and is bumped with the next planned downtime for updates each time they happen. I don't ask anything more than that

I'm sure announcements will be made for future updates. Thank you very much for your understanding regarding this matter.

I was going to mention that i had the IP of the server, but since it's now changed then nvm :D
But good job regardless.
Next time, You should...
1) Make an announcement/warning that it's going to happen.
2) Try not to accidently disable CloudFlare's protection.
3) Keep us updated via twitter! MCMarket_Org, you know the mcmarket twitter.
Thanks ;)

Gruss Then why don't you say that in your message instead of having "piety" on people that spend their time on a forum.

It's their life, not yours. What they get butthurt about should not matter to you unless it negatively affects you in a direct manner.
