I think the reports system really needs some improvement. A lot of the time users don't get proper notifications on the answers to their reports. I suggest creating a specific place on the forums where you can see all content on MCM that you have reported. I have some ideas on how it could be designed too.

Any time you hit the report button, it would redirect you to the reports center, which would include the following:

Link Box: Put in the link to what you're reporting.
Report Reason: Put the reason why you're reporting the thing in question.
Rule Violated: Simply say what rule is breaks.

After a report is made you could see your active reports, and perhaps (if staff wanted to) a queue of where your report is in line so people know when they'll be accepted next. When the report is handled the user gets a notification and redirecting to the notification takes them to the report, which will then show them whether it's accepted or denied, and a reason for why it's denied if that's the case.

We could also keep a history of all reports so users know what they've reported before.

This is just a rough idea. This way though users can maybe stop asking what's happened with their reports and whether it's handled or not.

If you disagree please explain why. If you agree and have nothing to add to the conversation, please just http://usetheagreebutton.com or you will be reported for low quality posting.

Part of the reason people dont get constantly notified of each report is because some (a LOT of) members have the annoying habit of making an issue about the outcome of every report. I speak from experience here. It would bog up the system even further.

That said, a central point for people to view what they've reported would be kind of nice.
The main advantage I see right now would be if people could retract/delete reports on people that they made and that later turned out to be unneeded. It would also reduce double-reporting.

Both of those last things are good side ideas. Make it where a post/comment/reputation/etc. can only be reported once, to avoid multiple reports on the same thing. And yes also deleting your reports if you find them unneeded or resolve the issue could be helpful for staff and users alike. The thing you mentioned with users making reports rather stupid is by notifying them we can inform them of why it was denied exactly and possibly even warn them directly for it, rather than just ignore the situation. People here won't learn if they aren't told that their reports are false/stupid/etc. If we make them understand that and enforce the misuse of the report system rules, we can perhaps work to stop it.

When you report a thread, you've done your thing. Let the staff handle the rest.

I literally don't see any purpose in you knowing if the user got punished or if the report got approved.

Its good to know if you're making a change in the community, because at the minute the only way to know is to spam the reports and get warning points

What we could definitely use is some way to prevent duplicate reports, I've had before that I forgot I had already reported something, and thus reported it again.
Being allowed to update existing reports with new information when they're not yet handled might also help. That way, if I have proof of a guy stealing one build, but find more builds he's stolen, I can add that to the report (downloaded builds being resold, not scam report material). Bad example, but you get the idea.

The responses thing is my main minus point for this suggestion too.

An entire system like this just seems a bit excessive. If something breaks a rule, report it and give a reason why it breaks a rule, it can just be a one word message "meaningless" and I'm sure that the moderators will be able to handle it. Making users provide more information not only makes them take extra time, but makes the moderators have to spend more time reading through information which is redundant and useless.

We may be making it so that you are always notified when a report is dealt with in the next update, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Denied, thanks for the suggestion.
