Hello, I have a question that I hope someone can answer. When server hosting companies provide Minecraft servers. Where do they get there servers. Like do they build their own or rent them
They mostly have their own servers in a data center, a lot of servers are stored there and they pay rent to the datacenter to have their servers there.
A lot of newer MC hosting places use rented hardware from places like SYS (SoYouStart), OVHCloud, ReliableSite, Hetzner etc...
If you want to run a more affordable long term solution though I would say possibly buying your own hardware is key aslong as you can pull in the monthly revenue & profits. It also lets you have ease of upgrades if you want to improve your hardware.
For VPS's, This basically uses allocations of certain system specs for it. For example they setup a VPS and allocate 2GB of RAM (out of the 64GB or 32GB they usually rent), then from there they also allocate the consumer a certain amount of vCores they want that spec to use. Sorry if this sounds breif I am not very knowledgable on VPS's
