Hello community.

Few question regarding server networks. I'm asking this for educational purposes only. Someone had recently explained to me that large server networks don't run on one host or one dedicated host. But rather multiple hosts that are all connected on one network.

Is this true? And if so, how does it work? If not, explain what actually happens, please. My final question is how to actually run a larger server network. Not management or anything of that sorts. But the necessary allocated hardware in order to allow a large player base. Don't get me wrong on that, I am a hardware genius, just not on servers.

Quick reminder that these questions are for educational purposes to unnecessary trash talk isn't going to help you or me. And if you expect to be paid for answering these questions then you can move on to the next thread.

Kind regards,

Well it depends, you can do what Mineplex does and hire a bunch if smaller servers, then connect them through a Bungee, or, you can hire a dedicated server and split it into lots of smaller servers and then join them.

A follow up question then. The answer is most likely yes; but do most people purchase multiple servers from one host? And how much RAM is dedicated into each game-mode? I don't expect a larger network like Mineplex to have 4GB for each of their game-modes, right?[DOUBLEPOST=1494927942][/DOUBLEPOST]
From what I know, and what would be common sense is, big servers host on multiple dedicated servers but at the same host. Would be better for paying for them, latency between servers etc.

Take YayMC for example, they host their minecraft gamemodes on its own dedicated server, except bungeecord and the lobby, hosted on the same dedicated server.
Personally you can easily host a 200 player server on a dedicated server but okay, their choice.
Can you elaborate on the following sentence: ""except on bungeecord and the lobby'', please? Why do they not run those on the dedicated server as well?

Not that big, closer to 500mb - 1GB for the smaller servers, remember that they only have upto ~20 players.

Also, remember it is a server per match, not per gamemode:

Example - CTF Gamemode - (might have) 10 small servers.

Per match? Really now. So if a server network has a Skywars, Bedwars and Eggwars game-mode you'd need to allocate a certain amount of RAM to each match within that game-mode? Or rather create a small server for each of those matches?
What happens if you simply dedicate all the RAM to the game-mode while letting the matches work with the amount of RAM dedicated to the game-mode?

What Mineplex does is buy a lot of really small servers, and put one match per server. I'm not saying it's the best method, but it is a method.

What you can also do is buy a large dedicated server, then split it into smaller VPSs, and have a server per VPS.

How it would usually work is you have your main Proxy. If your network is insanely large then get like 8GB.
Then you setup forced hosts (Lobbies or Hubs) The amount of ram depends, If your hub is simple and complex withholding 100 players get like 4GB.
Then you would purchase tons of Game Servers, Super Smash Bros' or what ever game-mode. 1GB all the way to 2GB.

There usually would be a backup proxy but you shouldn't need that. You can also use different locations like a European Proxy, American Proxy, Asian Proxy, etc..

Very informative. Two quick questions if you wouldn't mind. How much RAM is commonly allocated for modern Minecraft servers (i.e KitPvP, Factions, Prison, etc)? Various servers have different amounts of RAM allocated.
Second question being today I read a statement saying you can purchase one server of (let's say 16GB) and divide that into different game-mode servers. How would this work exactly?

(I know you didn't ask me, but I'll answer anyway)

1. It all depends on how many plugins you have, and how many players (And ofc the size of maps, etc).

If you run a kit pvp server, but only have 10 players online constantly (playerbase), then you could probably get away with only have a 1.5GB server, but you you ran a kit pvp server with multiple worlds, 50+ plugins and a 100 pb, you would need something larger. If you tell us what you are making (if anything), we can recommend how much you should buy.

2. Well it would only be one server, so you would install all the gamemodes, then just set up the plugins. You could do it in seperate world's if you wanted, and then use per world plugins, but if they don't conflict I would not bother.
