Server ownership - surviving the first week?

I recently opened a server. It's a Kit pvp server with many interesting things, including a custom MiniGame, jobs, semi creative, and all that good stuff.

I opened it today. Since I didn't have much time, I only advertised on the Minecraft forums and the server section of the same forum.

I got one new player, which didn't say a word in chat and went afk after some time.

I need to know what should I do next. I don't have money to spend until I start getting donations. At the same time, all donations will go to improving the server in one way or another.

I want more players. I want some to at least come and try the server, I think it's good enough to make them stay - I would.

What do you recommend as the best cheap advertising method? What should I do next?

1. Advertise on every page that you know. (PlanetMinecraft, MinecraftForums, Reddit)
2. NEVER advertise on other servers. This will ruin you.
3. Get a little youtuber to make videos in your server.
4. Setup Votifier. And use all websites that supports votes. Convince your players to vote everyday, for example they get x rank for voting x times.

These are the best options to get players.

I would, but I don't want Jack to give me a warning for "advertising a server on a marketplace forum". Smh.

Try and find some smaller twitch streamers and say you will give them a "famous" rank or something like that. Will help more people see your server and won't really cost you anything. Oh and post on a lot of forums not just 1 or 2. The more places the better chance of a player seeing it and joining. (but dont go to the extreme and have like 20 vote links or something xD)

I know a friend of a friend with a small YouTube channel, he would probably do some videos for me.

So yeah it's a good idea and I'll see if I can find someone.

Added the server to several server lists, however the problem is no one is on the server, so when someone joins he leaves quickly.

The players will think that it's a sh*tty server run by an unmature kid. That happened for me... 2.5 years ago.

Because I want to make it unique. Don't worry, the attack damage cooldown has been modified to be a hybrid of 1.8 and 1.9.

I'll let you know, YOU CAN fix 1.9's shit PvP. But now (forgive my term) there's been some sort of racism (idk) towards 1.9. Yes, 1.9 is hated by most fellow pvpers and anybody that plays Minecraft at all.

1 - There is NO Optifine for 1.9, which makes me not want to install it.
2 - Most players don't want to move to a whole new version as most servers kept 1.7/1.8.[DOUBLEPOST=1458581741][/DOUBLEPOST]Can't you use the protocol hack to make it 1.7/1.8/1.9 ?

MCGamer has it (big server ik) and everyone's happy.

But I fixed some things and made it cool....

1 - There is NO Optifine for 1.9, which makes me not want to install it.

There is too! In fact, I even installed shaders with it.

2 - Most players don't want to move to a whole new version as most servers kept 1.7/1.8.

1.7 NEEDS TO DIE ALREADY!

MCGamer has it (big server ik) and everyone's happy.

1.7 Needs to die.

1.8 doesn't have elytras and cool things, something I want to try on my server.
