Shoutbox Advertising = 20 minutes

There is way too much advertising going on in the shoutbox; it is at the point where it is unusable to hold a simple conversation with someone. Every time we look at the shoutbox it is filled with advertisements... Many advertisements which we are not interested in we are seeing OVER and OVER again, and it is getting so annoying we ignore all advertisements, or many of us don't use the shoutbox at all.

We need to change the advertising rules to limit how often you can advertise, making the limit only five minutes longer can really make a small difference on how often people can advertise.


For you guys saying, 'This is a marketplace! We sell things!', think about this.

If you advertised every 20 minutes for an hour, you will only be advertising one less time than if you were doing it every 15 minutes. One less time, that isn't really really too much of a sacrifice to someone to have to complain.

The shoutbox is a place which is abused to advertising threads. The rules against bumping are once every 24 hours, however you can post your link in the shoutbox every 15 minutes (4 times an hour), and people are using it to bump their threads four times an hour for however many hours they spend on the site.

Adding an extra five minutes will clean the shoutbox up from other users advertising and will allow more conversations to be held thru it. More conversations essentially means more active & engaged users. This will actually help advertisers by getting more people to click on their links, as there will be less links spammed, more active users using the shoutbox, and fewer people ignoring all advertisements.

I agree with this, when we discussed this in the staff chat, I did suggest we made it half an hour between advertisements, though, and I still stand by that. I feel that the shoutbox should be a place where users can talk without constantly being bombarded by people advertising their "AMAZING VPS" every minute from different people.

I also think that we should do more about click bait and false advertisements made, with people claiming they're the "#1 _____" with no source for it or consistently using caps and emojis; it gets annoying.

This is pretty much what I think is silly. I don't want the shoutbox to be a place where people are constantly making the experience less pleasant for everyone else by saying "MOTHER OF GOD DAMN EPIC DEALS!" over and over.

Ehhh.... rooms are a feature that is in our current addon for this, however, I am reluctant to use them. As it is people barely follow the rules when there are staff in the shoutbox, adding in different rooms like this just makes it more difficult to moderate and the conversations have less people in them.

say putting ads in the shout out box is a 5 week ban and have a box at the buttom of the page where you can buy a slot for $5 members $2 paid usersers (paid ranks) and ads will go on a cyle (showing 4 at a time and each is on for about 20 secs) (and goes down the slots)

slot 1 (time being on 5secs)
slot 3 (time being on 5secs)
slot 2 (time being on 5secs)
slot 4 (time being on 5secs)

so the shout out box is more of a chat and where players can request something and someone reply with there place if then and only then

We already do have a bunch of ways for people to advertise though, we have sidebar banners, stickies, and resource stickies. The good thing about the shoutbox is that it is free to advertise, and I don't really think we should make you pay to even do that, I'm just saying that I think that we want it to be lessened.

Here's my 2 cents upon this topic.

The problem is that too many people do it at once but once it clears up, it's alright. Most people realise after a few advertisements that people aren't interested and stops wasting their own time, sometimes even hours go by without anyone doing it.

Making it 30 min would be pretty overkill and you're usually only able to scroll back 15 minutes, so sticking to 30 would be hard to follow, even for those who follow the time limit. Sure, you might say that it's ''our responsibility'' but I highly doubt that more than 1-2 would actually note down the time. It'd just cause an unnecessary amount of pain in the butt for everyone involved, the staff and the people advertising, as people would be more likely to be warned and get salty over it.

If you see someone not following the 15 minute limit, report them.

If you think 20 minutes will help enough to be worth it, you should go for it but please refrain from making it longer, due to reasons stated above.

I completely agree and as a business advertising here I try to be courteous to all the chatters. I rarely advertise more than once a day in the Shoutbox, if that. We've earned a nice reputation in the hosting section and picked up some great clients from here. Sometimes less is more. The less often you advertise the more interested people seem to be when you actually do.

I agree the timer should be increased though as it's not always fun for the users trying to have a conversation.

We've earned a nice reputation in the hosting section and picked up some great clients from here. Sometimes less is more. The less often you advertise the more interested people seem to be when you actually do.

I see it working great on gambling sites, however there is a lot more strict staff members and they moderate the chat more than here
