So, I'm not sure if the idea behind the new rule about not advertising in the shoutbox had to do with clutter in what should be normal chat, or if it was a push to negate promoted advertisement by players in general. If the latter, then this doesn't mean much, as it defeats the purpose of the new rules, which I'm not here to debate.
That being said it's possible using the chat plugin that we currently have to have multiple channels at once. I propose that we have two set channels - one for general chat, and one for sales.
The main argument here is against promoted player adverts. This eliminates sales getting in the way of casual chat while still providing users to actively promote their services to the community.
"But Lex," you say, "If people want goods or service, they'll seek them out!" True, that tends to happen. However, it's not uncommon that people pushing out their ads tend to get more traffic than those who don't, simply by suggestion. Besides, window-shopping isn't just a real-life deal. I never knew that I needed your plugin that offers hugs to players, but since I just saw you say it, I now realize how badly I need this in my life. So, my point is that whether or not you actively need something, on a site like this, you're more inclined to purchase something being "directly" offered to you, instead of browsing threads.
"But wait, Lex! Shoutbox already has a dwindling number of players in it. This would just spread them out more." Maybe, maybe not. I'm not proposing multiple casual channels, but a second single channel with a defined purpose about it. Unless you're actively searching for potential new and shiny things to buy, or actively advertising your new and shiny things, then chances are you won't be actively watching the shoutbox - and, if you are, there's a good chance that you'd be switching back and forth. If it were a secondary casual channel, I could see this being more of an issue, but I doubt it would - besides, this has the potential to bring more players IN to the chat. People come to advertise, and tab to the other channel because hey, they may as well. The only strain that I see possibly coming up is the need for staff to switch back and forth between channels to make sure people aren't doing dumb shit in either channel - though, with the report function, I'm sure something could be figured out.
This is a way of compromise. Yes, it has the potential to have some drawbacks, but it also has the potential to smooth over some community tensions, boost clientele among sellers here, and potentially boost player count in the chat, allowing for more general interaction.
EDIT// Just realized Agario didn't give me enough time to post this and ninja'd me to my idea, whoops. Someone can feel free to lock/delete this thread if they deem it necessary.
