Since many people tend to spam the shoutbox with links (usually advertising their shops/services/items) here's my proposal. Add a feature which creates a limit of 15 minutes for ANY link posted. If it's clearly a link, this plugin would prevent the message from being sent and inform the user on how much time they have remaining. If users attempted to type out a link like so:

http : // google . com

or in some type of form to bypass the system, they could simply be warned/kicked.

Thoughts an opinions please.

I think the issue is more of people spamming links to their threads instead of all links in general like you mentioned should be limited. Perhaps mc-market or selly.gg links should only be subject to this instead of things like gyazo's and YouTube videos.

I understand your point but it's hardly something people post in shoutbox. Usually people make threads for video promotion and sometimes for images. Jkaay is a good example of someone who does this (not calling you out, just using you as an example). This could simply help staff narrow down on some of the issues that can occur in shoutbox.

I agree with puzeh . Only block/timeout certain link types to avoid frustration if people are trying to share multiple videos or scribbl.io games. It doesn't hurt to allow certain "harmless" links to pass through, it'd only take a bit of extra work.

This isn't filtering anything, just puts the time limit on it. Nothing more.

Right. Come to think, there isn't really a reason anyone has to spam a link. If there ever was a reason, it'd be a rare case, and everything can't be perfect. Ignore previous comment - I'm in agreement.

Exactly. And even in special cases, you can always whisper. This just helps clean up shoutbox and puts less work on the staff in the long run.

A link is not necessarily an advertisement, bad idea
Let me collect some screenshots for you[DOUBLEPOST=1499297880][/DOUBLEPOST]XD

You're correct in saying that advertisement isn't necessarily all links, but it would result in a cleaner chatbox. Just from this screenshot we see 3 link adverts and one non link. Yeah there's still gonna be advertising but this would help keep chat clean. Not a bad idea.

This feels like one of those suggestions, where, if accepted, will have other suggestion threads within a month after implantation suggesting that it be removed, and then get a bunch of support...

The 15 minute rule forbids advertisements within 15 minutes, not links themselves.
This is important, because on top of advertising, some people also like to engage in conversation, which sometimes requires linking to a youtube video of relevance, a parts list, an imgur post, a discussion thread, a spigot tutorial or plugin or honestly anything... There's an infinite number of circumstances that could arise in which a link is not an advertisement and is perfectly acceptable in the context of the conversation.

That's why we have chat mods enforcing that rule, and not a blind censor.
The number of chat reports we get concerning the 15 minute rule compared to the number of moderation reports we get is no comparison at all. Implementing this won't decrease the overall staff workload by anything noticeable. So please, if you see someone violating this rule, just report them, they'll be warned. If they continue to do it, they'll be temporarily banned from shoutbox, issued points, and so on and so forth until they're no longer able to use SB in one way or another.

Yes, shoutbox often gets filled with ads. It also often gets filled with conversation.
The ads, being more annoying, are often more memorable and easy to complain about. However, it's actually pretty rare that that spam has anything to do with any significant number of users posting violating the 15 minute rule.
It's just that a lot of people want to post their ads, especially when they see other people doing it and know they won't be interrupting a conversation. (At least, I'd like to think they were being so thoughtful)

If you want to get rid of those walls of ads that pop up, I'd think a better idea would be to simply increase the amount of time between ads to 20 minutes or half an hour.
Maybe even an hour. Not sure I could agree with that, but for the goal I would assume you have in mind, it's a much more relevant suggestion to make.

Denied, thanks for the suggestion.
