Should I spend money on advertising?
Before you even think of spending loads of money in to a server here are some things you should consider: how old is your server, is the chat formatted neatly, and do new players have any chance against other players ?
How old is your server: If a server is new(1 month-1 year) the money would be better spend on advancing the unique experience of the server's game play. If you spend money on advertising for a very generic server those players may not stay for too long and soon you may find yourself wasting money. If your server is new just wait a little longer and keep bumping on pmc.
is the chat formatted neatly: Some owners find &k a good thing to have in ranks along with bolded letters. some young players may find that a neat thing but most people find it very annoying when the chat is basically flashing with colors and different formats. Having a neat chat also makes you look more professional.
Do new players stand a chance against other player: this is over looked a lot of times because of how op the server is or simply because the server is pay to win from the start. You have to make sure that the server is fun from the start till the end. Meaning if a new player comes on to the server and gets killed many times within the first hour he will most likely not come back. You want to make sure that the new member has as much fun as any other active member on the server.
Are streamers good?
What I tell many owners is not to pay for streamer. This has noting to do with streamers being bad at what they do but it's just not worth it. When you pay a streamer to stream on your server you will hit a really high number of players but that will only last until the streamer leaves after that you will be back where you were in the begging. Unless you pay the regularly so they come on once a week for 3 months or something then that will benefit you.
Should I buy a slot?
This comes back to how old your server is. If your server is fairly new and you really want to get a good start you might want to buy a $3000-5000 slot. This is a bad idea for few reasons one of them being the fact that you just started and the server has no players. When a server has no players online people wont join as much as they would if they saw there is 10-20 players. So what you are paying may not benefit you.
Hosting Events
Hosting evens like tournaments with rank or cash prices is a good way to get players. All you have to do is post it on the forums that you are hosting one of those and people will come in running to get some money and who knows they may even stay for a while. This method is a lot more cheap compared to spending money on youtubers, slots, or steamers. this will cost you $50 - $200. Depending on how big you want the price. This is a good idea for the servers that are just starting out. Before you open your server make a big hype on forums about a tournament you will be hosting on server opening.
Free advertising
People say that free advertising doesn't exist. I say that not true. It may be some what time consuming but there are few ways that a person with little or no money can advertise their server. One way is to bump your server submission pmc(planetminecraft) everyday. Doing this you can get 3-10 new players daily depending what time you post. I found bumping at 4 pm us central time zone. Another good way to advertise for free is by posting your server on Mc forums under servers and bump it as much as possible also in peak hours. This can give you a few more players. The last free method I have for now would be making you server banner your fourm signature and stay active in a lot of Minecraft related forums.
This is all that i had time for I will add a few more things later on. please keep this active so everyone gets some help with their advertising.
