Hey people/developers of this great website! I just happen to have quick question? So I recently quit minecraft ( don't play it anymore ) but, I have a lot of spare time and I was wondering how does one become a developer? I thought of this when I was just busy surfing around on here and would see many posts of people seeking developers. So yeah I honestly want to do this because I heard devs get a lot of money ( I'm only 16 so I don't have a drivers license so I cannot go to work ) so yeah. As of now I'm currently learning some languages on a website called 'Code Academy'. I don't know where to start though? Like how do people become so successful in developing? I'd appreciate any tips/replies/suggestions you guys have. Thanks!

Learn Java however you please, then continue with the Bukkit/Spigot API (if you're doing plugin development)

Honestly, doing it for the money isn't very wise if you're looking for money. It takes lots of time to learn. Not an overnight thing.

Think of it as learning an actual verbal language, like French. It takes years.

You become a developer here if you are able to code minecraft plugins. You can code the plugins in Java. And as I know Codecademy doesn't teach you how to do minecraft plugins with the Spigot API. So it's better to learn it elsewhere. There is another possible thing to write plugins called Skript. Just type Bukkit Skript into google and pick a result. However I don't want to get killed on here so I suggest you to learn whatever you want. Most people here will say Java. You just need to begin and keep learning...

So true :)
Just never stop to learn. That's the way to do it.

Yeah I completely agree, I mean I guess doing it for the money isn't wise but this is probably one of the simplest things I can do to make money online, like all I'm literally doing is typing code into eclipse or whatever. Thanks for your guys replies! I will note down all the suggestions :) I guess I will start by learning the basics and just make my way up to the big leagues. You know what they say, practice makes perfect![DOUBLEPOST=1458526320][/DOUBLEPOST]

True but it all starts with yourself and how motivated/dedicated you really are? In all sense it comes down to praticing a lot and learning from your mistakes

Not really that simple, it takes a lot of critical thinking and creativity. Also, I would recommend you like math :p

:0 I enjoy math somewhat, back in middle school I was 2 levels above the average math grade. So by 8 th grade I was already learning trigonometry and other 10 grade mathematics.

I'm good with Python and PHP and a bit Java (Never needed it :p) but I really hate maths. All those companies say you need to be good in maths but that's totally wrong. And there is so a big difference between school marks and what you really can. Of course some basic knowledge of maths is important but that's all.

I said I recommend you like it. If you like it the whole process will be easier.

Maybe. It's more logical thinking. If you can think like a computer, it's easier at all.

So would a great start be watching YouTube tutorials on how to code plugins? I don't have a lot of knowledge of coding plugins, I've only coded a plugin that sends a message to the player when they log on ( forgot all the code for that ) so yeah. Also people have been using something called skript to code ? Idk if it's any easier or harder but do you guys suggestion I try and get into that?

Really your decision if you want to learn Skript or Java. Skript is really easy to learn and it's faster to write a Skript as writing a java plugin. Java is good to learn for things beside minecraft. Because Skript is for minecraft plugins only.

Hmm, I guess I will do Java and skript. Skript sounds interesting though. If it's easier to do then I will go for it. But of course it's really good to have some level of understanding of coding languages.

I'm a developer and I've been hired by some very large servers and networks. I can assure you, getting there isn't easy however the money is great and definitely worth spending the time learning.

There's much less demand for skript developers and by knowing Java it will assist you if you go to learn another language. Plus, you can put on a CV if it's relevant that you're competent in Java.

It's up to you, however you do need to learn Java first! It may not seem it but it soon becomes apparent when you begin to do advanced bukkit plugins that require the implementation of Objects, Constuctors and Enums.

Anyway, the choice is yours. Best of luck with it.
Currently I'm learning Java on codeacademy and I'll admit, some things are pretty tricky. So far I've learned if and else statements and things like confirm("message"), substrings , console.log, etc. as of now, I'm learning about variables.

That's JavaScript, not Java.[DOUBLEPOST=1462658649][/DOUBLEPOST]

Don't learn Skript, there's no point. Skript RAM whores on servers therefore larger servers cannot use them, I definitely recommend learning Java.
