SysAdmin TIPS, Advice and how to get started

Hi, MCM. I'm currently looking for some help on how to become a SysAdmin. Unfortunately, I won't really be able to pay, but if you can shoot me with some help on site, that would be awesome : )

I started by looking on YouTube and pinpointing the area of system administration I was most focused on. "System-administration" can mean a million things, from windows VM management, to Linux firewall policies. There is a whole range of things to learn, don't try to tackle them all at once.

Get started with the Spiceworks community, they are a group of IT pro's who are constantly giving advice and recommendations. They have a forum similar to this one.

Once you've established that, I'd recommend buying a VPS or some sort of virtual server you can experiment with, mess with multiple operating systems; though I'd start with Ubuntu. Avoid buying hardware until you know what you're doing (I made that mistake and ruined a perfectly good HP server, if you can call HP servers good..)

One thing I would highly recommend would be get a test environment and hands on explore the system and go from there, using places like YouTube or just a quick google search, you can also just do some random projects which will definitely help improve your knowledge significantly. Of course you could also take a course on the subject, but I feel though you would learn better from experience. Goodluck to you though!

Get a GCP instance. Usually it's covered under the "free credit" you get when you sign up. They can be wiped so easily but run specialized versions of OSes if you don't provide your own ISO
