It could be the bots that come onto the site that monitor views and overall site information. Although you can't see it in the member section, probably because it was removed, they still most likely lurk.

Since most bots, especially the google ones lurk and view analytics with views and such, it probably views the thread(s) that are picking up views to see why it is gaining so much popularity. That's just a guess, I don't know any stone answer.
