So me and a friend are going to be deploying a very large server in the next few months. As development and testing appears, we're in need of a pretty beefy dedicated server. We've looked at options, and we're set on getting some sort of i7, at least with 64 GB RAM. I can't guarantee anything, as no one can, but player base will LIKELY be over a hundred, with many servers running on the dedi.

And, OVH appeared to me in a bright light. An i7 6700k overclocked with 64 GB RAM for around $130. Though, just as I browse the internet and Reddit, I see people hating on OVH, or just saying there a bad host?

Are they really that bad? What do people have against them? If they are, who should I go to for my hardware?

Short "version" Network and support just isn't that great. Will you be "fine" if you know what your doing? Sure but it could be better.

Used a VPS from them to host a raid bot on minecraft, never really had issues except for their support.

Support is fine for those who know what they're doing. Probably the only reason people crap on OVH support is because they try to use it for software issues/support. They're simply there to help with hardware, billing, etc.

I have a friend that uses their dedicated servers, i also played on the server for around 2+ years. Without knowing the specs of what was being used, it often had lag on the server between 70-80 players. My friend recently upgraded his server with them, have not really tested it out yet, but he did say it was cheap and he got a good price for it. Make of that what you will :)

You compare hosts based on the performance. In almost all cases it depends on the specs of the dedicated server, the load on the server and how well / efficiently it has been setup and configured.

Hey blazedesign,

Generally, if you're a large host... there are always going to be people complaining, and you may only notice the really loud ones, which often happen to be the negative ones. Overall, OVH is a good host if you need the enterprise DDoS protection (which you most likely don't).

If you're looking for a different host, I can PRICE BEAT OVH's 6700K units, I also have this deal, which I can discount for you at $111:
http://www.reliablesite.net/dedicated-servers/quad-core-server/intel-core-i7-6700k-64GB

You'll find out 6700K units aren't overclocked so they will only get upto 4.0Ghz base vs OVH's 4.4Ghz overclocked base frequency.

Let me know what you think, and lets have a chat about your options. :)

Kind regards,
Lachlan D

Personally from experience I didnt have great times with them. The first few times when I was just messing around it seemed all good, but when actually buying from them for a server, there was very noticeable lag and I couldnt find out why. (This could've just been me doing something wrong but I tried everything and even contacted support and I showed them everything and they said it should be fine when it wasnt). Compared to other hosting services when I hosted my server I did not see much lag
