Heyo, so I'm currently planning my own server with a pretty cool theme in a Google doc. I have a TON of ideas floating around for it, and have a friend helping me with it. Problem is I've never done this before. I haven't managed a server in a very long time and have never owned my own before - so everything is completely new to me; from setups and configurations to implementing builds and worlds.

I was just wondering if anyone could help me out with some pointers about how to go about doing this? I have an idea in mind, a theme, name, builds, locations, etc... But I'm going in pretty much blind here. I have funds, so no worries about that, I just need some general tips from anyone who could share them, particularly server owners.

Sorts of things I'm really wondering are:

  • How can I start this adventure on my own with no experience?
  • Should I get a partner who has some experience, but then why partner with me when I have none?
  • How should I begin actually developing the server when I have it planned out? What should I do first and last, etc?
Thanks!

  • How can I start this adventure on my own with no experience?
Do as much research as you can beforehand, ask some people for help (note that some people will have really enticing offers - I won't say they'll scam you but it's risky and I suggest being wary). Once you get started there will be mistakes made, don't beat yourself up because of it.
  • Should I get a partner who has some experience, but then why partner with me when I have none?
If you find a partner w/ experience they'll want you to bring something to the table too, I assume funds.

  • How should I begin actually developing the server when I have it planned out? What should I do first and last, etc?
It's all up to you, I suggest working on the setup and graphics first, then whatever other thing you have next.

I say just go for it, you might succeed, or you might fail - this will be a great learning experience either way.

Good luck <3

Hello,

I'll answer some of the questions you left in the thread.

1. It takes a while to get used to this sort of stuff, there's quite a lot involved depending on the type of server. I guess you just learn after time or if someone actually helps you out and guides you.
2. I would recommend getting a partner who has experience if you have none, I'm sure there is plenty of people who would be interested in helping out. Most will want to be receiving money (percentage/amount) or some sort of reward after the server opens usually if they're gonna be doing the majority of the developing of the server..
3. I'd recommend just starting with everything essentials and that's needed, get some media for the server (discord, twitter, website) and just start getting the name out there, growing the server while you're developing it, get some art to give new users a great impression of the server, depending on the type of server there will be different development involved, a fully custom server will obviously take a lot longer, and is not cheap. Configurations would be a better start, using plugins that are already made and just configuring them to your liking, if you can't find a plugin you're looking for or doesn't suit your needs, then getting a developer for it would be ideal.

If you have anymore questions, let me know.

Cheers for the advice mate! Yeah I expect potential partners to be interested in equity or percentage of donations and I'm fine with that. You get out what you put in at the end of the day!

Thanks a lot bro! <3 I agree, nothing ventured nothing gained! I know I'll make some mistakes along the way - part of the learning process.
