Tips for starting a MC Server

I have been debating starting a MC server. I wondered if anyone who currently or has owned a server has any tips / do's and don'ts what starting a server.

The very first question you have to ask yourself is, how seriously do you want to take this? How committed are you to making this server profitable? If your intention is just to create a place for you and your friends to have fun, then grab a cheap host, download a few plugins, and you'll be good to go. However, if you want to dedicate investment and resources into a sustainable and monetizable platform and community, then it gets a bit more complicated.

"Starting an MC server" is a very vague statement. What are your goals and intentions with this server, do you have ideas and inspiration? And then, how are you going to use the resources available to you to capitalise on those ideas? As you can see, there are a lot of questions that you need to ask yourself before designing your server, most of which do not involve Minecraft itself, but rather you and your vision.

Unfortunately, one cannot expect to be able to design and manage a perfect server from some "tips" posted on a forum thread. So, my advice to you is to do some research, speak to people, and get involved with all things server-wise. This includes everything from plugin development, hosting, websites, etc. You need to have a reasonable grasp of all these topics in order to understand the tools available to you. Unless of course, you are willing to pay someone to worry about that all for you. But on the other side of this is the game design side. How are you going to attract players to your server and how will you make them addicted? What makes your server so special, what is the new and exciting innovation that you've come up with?

I wish you luck, and I'll finish with this - don't expect results overnight, do your research, and plan thoroughly. Networking is a great thing...
