Hi all, First time on MCM, but not new to Minecraft, Video/film editing, or selling Minecraft trailers.

Firstly, why do some "editors" here call themselves "Trailer Cinematographers"? A cinematographer is a director of photography (DoP) on a film set. A Cinematographer doesn't edit or operate a camera, that's down to the editor(s) (1asst editor, 2nd asst editor) and camera operators. Who came up with Cinematographers here?! Anyway lol.

I can't believe that people here are prepared to edit a trailer for $5. I charge £25 for a WeTransfer link to a deliverable! Toilet paper costs $5, You value toilet paper more than an editor? A trailer is the best piece of marketing material your server can get, it's the first thing a potential player sees, and yet, that's what you're prepared to pay for one? Idk... Sounds strange to me.

Others charge $45, which even so, is far too cheap. Let's break it down, A good trailer takes at least 5 hours to film and edit inc transcoding, rendering, and exporting times. At $45 the editor gets $9 per hour?? Have some self-worth, Your Adobe subscription costs $69 a month, your equipment costs money, and you should be reimbursed for the time you spent learning the software, and learning how to creativley edit.

Is this all normal here?!

You'll realise that you can't make good money on your $100-200+ trailers because you get 1 client per/century.
I know trailer makers who can make a trailer of good quality for $30 in under an hour or two.

It's a Minecraft forum, people aren't going to pay industry standard rates for editors. They're mostly under 18.
I know it's a MC forum lol![DOUBLEPOST=1625933448][/DOUBLEPOST]

People here call themselves professional... e.g. Professional video editing. Professionals charge industry rates.

I agree with this. Creating and designing stuff like this costs time. You should raise the value and quality of your worth at the same time. Quality > Quantity.

Some people are content with how much they set their prices. Most of the customers here aren't your typical businessmen or studios who have a crapload of cash to spend on. The people who order these trailers and edits are either teens who are making YT videos for fun or players who just started their MC servers, not Marvel or Disney.

Professional video editing.
Obviously for more clicks but most of them still look professional

I do think that MCM in general everyone here should ad a 0 to their quotes. They will get 50-75% less work, but they will make more money in total and be less busy.

I can't speak for other industries but for illustration, standard rates are 300 EUR per day, or 37.50 EUR per hour or ~45USD, plus VAT. It is a bit lower in eastern europe and china ~200USD per day and higher in the US and UK @450 GBP per day.

On MCM I charge 35USD per hour for custom work, which is around the point where ~90% of my clients choose to buy what I offer. I do get about 10% of clients who walk away after hearing the cost of my works. If I would increase that rate to the industry standard 50USD there would probably be ~50% falloff of clients who would opt for less expensive options.

Hi there,

I call myself a cinematographer, cuz first of all, it sounds more professional. And also, because it just translates to a camera operator in my language, so I never really thought about changing it and just went with that even though it might not be the correct term to use here.

Also, about the prices, for me, I, on average, get 3 people a day that wants a trailer. 2 of them, most of the time back off, because they think it's too expensive or they have other plans, or just don't answer anymore. Right now, I have to decline multiple people because I'm most of the time already working on a project. I make about 100 euros on average for every trailer. I make these in around 10 hours. Without rendering times, so that would make 10 euros per hour. Which for someone of my age is pretty good. I have a school license for my adobe package, making it only 100 euros per year. And I don't really have any equipment.

So overall, I think this is pretty fair. I myself take all of those things into account when setting up my prices. But because I don't really have any expenses, I don't have to put those prices too high, and I still want to make sure they aren't too high, so I can still get customers. But as you said, some people don't have their prices too high, mostly because they just started their business. I'm doing this for 1.5 years now and am more experienced so I can up my prices.

I hope I could make it clearer about why we price our products the way we price them. If you have any more questions, I'm happy to answer them.

I don't think professional in this instance means charging industry rates. I think professional in this case means being professional, having experience in this niche of video editing. I think professional has less meaning in this Minecraft trailer industry. In this case, professional doesn't mean charging high prices and working with big businesses. It's not that serious, if I'm honest.

Honestly, it's cause of the nature of Mc-Market and Minecraft in general.

For my services, I always charge industry rate then an Mc-Market rate.

Mostly because..
1.) I used many of these services when I was younger and I didn't have $300 to splash on a logo or website. I got quality design work from self taught creators at fair prices at that age point.
2.) Mc-Market is a lot more casual in nature and it feels like a community. I'm much more lenient to someone who asks for some design or code work here then someone outside just because I've been involved with it for so long and I love seeing everybody here collectively strive to create something!
3.) Another big factor to consider is your type of currency. 50$ USD is like 65~ +-3 CAD, and even more in other currencies. Mc-Market is global. If I was doing design work in my country of origin, $50 would go a much longer way and I would be paid more then the average person makes in a week for a single logo (including many designers who work for legitimate companies)

:) Anyways, I'm not complaining! Many people here do great work for affordable prices, and yes if we go into industry we'd be making much more, I feel like it's a great way for people to transition from self-taught and get experience working with actual people! I learned many of my most valuable skills from here on MC-Market, hell I even got a solid SWE internship because of my experiences here. I'm thankful for everyone here and want to see this keep going!

So being wrong sounds more professional? Your job is to shoot trailers, then edit them in either an NLE (Non-linear editor) like Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer, Magix Vegas Pro (Used to be sony's) or a Compositor like After Effects, or Apple motion.

Again, a cinematographer doesn't do any of these things. An editor/camera operator does. It gets difficult as with MC, you obviously don't have cameras, it's all virtual, so I'd just call myself an editor.

10 euros per hour is unbelievably cheap, but I understand, this is the market.

You are correct. It does sound more professional. And as other people said, this is a community. No big company will get on here and expect everything to be correct and have industry prices. I make enough money, more than my peers and can't complain.
You also have something called virtual cinematography. So I don't think it's all wrong. But I'm fine with how I call it. I don't think people will really care on here. If they do, I'll be hearing it from them eventually.
