Title says it al really. I have a contact in my Skype who uses a dedicated server and VPS occasionally. He says VPS are only really good for hosting websites. I this true. Would you recommend me investing more money into a dedicated server? If so please recommend a service too me.

Regards.

Vpses can run a Minecraft server, it's not only for a website. It all depends on the ram and cores you get and possibly the processor. I would only recommend a dedi to those who are decent in system administration, to prevent errors turn your dedicated into vpses such as in the case you need to reinstall software which isn't easy on a dedicated.

Depends entirely on the VPS. A lot of hosts prohibit Minecraft as it's very CPU taxing. We allow users to run this on our servers though and our clients seem pretty happy with our services.

Kibra has been telling me how smooth it's been. It's genuinely down to how your host of choice operates and the hardware and network they use.

Iv used a few VPS hosts in the past, hosted a few small servers with about 75 people at peak.

It all depends if you can fix any issues you might have with a VPS. Also if you know how to set up your own panel.

GoMach5 was generous enough to help me with my panel.

Another factor would be price and if you know what you are buying. You find most VPS hosts resell hardware and oversell it. You could be paying for 5GB ram and it wouldn't all be dedicated to you.

Overall, for growing communities with about 30-50 players should think of a VPS in my opinion. Bigger communties with 75-100+ players probably want to look at a beefy dedicated.

Hope this helped!

I strongly reccomend GoMach5 as a VPS host. My experiance with them has been smooth with little issues. I can now do 3million-5million block edits with no lag! Its truely amazing!

What's the difference between a normal Minecraft hosting service to a VPS? MC hosts are normally much cheaper?

Minecraft hosting runs on a VPS. If I had a dedicated server, i'd personally change it into a VPS for safety. VPSes should theoretically be cheaper because there's no MultiCraft license required, but many VPS hosts also get control panels such as SolusVM which adds onto the price. Overall their the same really.

Hosting companies such as mine charge less on OpenVZ VPSes and charge more on KVM, although both OpenVZ and KVM is free software. Its just because it requires the master on a separate machine if using SolusVM.

Depends,

1. The hardware - some use cheap hardware that lowers prices
2. The amount they oversell - A LOT of mc hosts oversell the hardware
3. With a vps you get safety of backend protection. Firewalls and such
4. VPS's are used to host mc servers
5. You can see with most VPS hosts, the amount of memory where with mc hosts you cant

Minecraft specific hosts might be cheaper but they can oversell harshly and while this is true with a VPS as well this just highlights why picking the right host is important.
