Okay, let me break it down:
The groom is always prepared with bags of money and with his friends guarding him to help him break in, because the bride side will be ready in front of the gate of where the wedding happens, and they won't let him in unless the groom satisifes them with money.

Another one is where they steal his shoes and just make fun of it or blackmail him, it's called Joota Chupa in India.

"The game of the Joota Chupai is meant to show the acceptance and open hearts of both sides of the family and how willing and ready they are to share lifetime of laughter and fun together." ~ some site from Google

Blackmail isn't really the appropriate term, just stealing their shoes and watching him look for them is fun. But it's mostly not letting him in somewhere, e.g. the wedding hall or his room after the wedding. Because the bride will move in with the groom, the bride's family just messes with the groom to strengthen their bond, I guess.

I'm just playing along here, cultures can be weird though, I agree.

Usually small amounts are insisted on. It's like a game, the groom's 'back up team', usually his friends, help him get through the crowd and not give money, or whats really common is turn the place into a snow spray battlefield. It all makes sense though, as the couple gets a lot of money from people as gifts usually.

Oh and it's not always about the money, it's sometimes just stealing something of the groom, but it gets returned at last. Our target is to worry the groom somehow and just have fun. Someone from indian cultures pls help me out here lmao

indian communities are quite tight knit. They wouldn’t do something like this with bad intentions
