I'm a great designer--I do graphics and web design, but, I want to enhance my skills in the backend so I can add features other than a simple contact form.

PebbleHost
High performance, consistent uptime and fast support. Minecraft hosting that just works.

Reading, youtubing, googling etc it all comes to you after some point.
The key is staying dedicated and having the motivation.

Reading (mainly blogs, I've only recently started reading books), Youtube, other people (had a few mentors that worked in industry and just friends with the same interests/goals), College (done 2 years at College), and University (done 1 year so far).

Would you, at all, recommend using an online course, such as one from Codeacademy or Udemy? I have taught myself frontend design through youtube and just picking different designs apart.

Honestly, I'm not sure because I never used Codeacademy or Udemy, However it certainly wouldn't hurt to try their courses.
I would recommend looking up Eli The Computer Guy on youtube he's got about 6 hours in videos on backend development very nice guy. I watched him a lot years ago when I was starting out.

Trial and error. I knew JS from frontend development and started making Discord Bots. With the knowledge from that, I proceeded to do more, my first RESTful API etc. Not the best way, but the best for me as I hate doing theory only.
My motivation to learn is the need for something. I need/want something, let's code it. I don't know how? Learn it!

If you have no idea on what direction you want to go for in web development, consider taking a good full read through this - https://github.com/kamranahmedse/developer-roadmap

It helps you visualize your options, however do note you can still prospect for other things which aren’t shown in the map.

Once you understand your options and have a clear plan on what you want to learn, then search up online guides relevant to the topic and teach yourself from the internet.
