what an oxymoron, change your title as development = backend, while design = frontend...
development doesnt always equal back end
in this day and age if you're only coding frontend (which you explicitly state you aren't coding backend) then it's design. Backend development is using PHP, heavy javascripting (e.g AJAX posts and gets), or any type of backend language compatible with the webserver you use.
Theres no rule anywhere that states the term development should only be used for back-end. When you build the front-end of the website you still developing it, designing it would cover ui / ux. I've heard many developers use the term develop for front end when they code it.

Web Development is used for languages that involve BACKEND. Web Designers design and make the FRONTEND.
When you build the front-end of the website you build the face of it, HTML is not a coding language, it is how you use a page and define what is going to be placed, CSS makes the website pretty, and styles it.
Web Development is how you make it function to become dynamic from static. For example, PHP can be used to put custom variables and make your website DYNAMIC using functions such as Math.Random (yes I know JS can do this to, I'm not there yet), mysqli, POST and GET variables, etc.
JS is a special exception, as you can use it within HTML, Javascript would mainly be used for refreshing, processing of GET and POST via AJAX, certain div elements, etc.
You, my friend, are doing web designing, I can get a community of web developers to disagree with you.

That is a web designer, front-end web development is for kiddies who think HTML is a coding language.

Learn to read carefully, JS is a special exception as said, HTML and CSS is considered web design. While HEAVY Javascripting (aka not minimal javascript, basic js used to communicate with the backend) is considered a coding language.

Stop twisting my words, Javascript is a coding language, but in our contexts of design and development it meets in the middle.
Sure, but you said that front-end developers are just web designers, which they're definitely not. Especially today, with more and more functionality being moved from the back-end to client-side javascript

He doesn't understand that web design and development are two different things but one can do both. Not all designers are developers and not all developers are designers although developers usually have some experience of designing. I know my vocab because I have been taking UI courses and separate development courses and the term "development" is used for both coding front-end and back-end.[DOUBLEPOST=1520444156][/DOUBLEPOST]and since this thread has turned into an argument, here's to add to the pudding that front-end developers still "develop" the website.
