I own a hosting company and thought I would ask the MCM community in general what you are looking for in a hosting company when you are thinking about who to buy from. Thank you in advance.
Looking for something well-established. If a host is well known and has been running for 10+ years, and has had good reviews and speed for a while, I'd pay for that rather than the newcomer, even if the established one is slightly more expensive.
- History of the Hosting/Reviews of the Hosting
- Support Team Response Time & Responses
- Specs for the Price (Example, terrible specs high price/somewhere around that)
If I want to run a commercially available MC Server I wouldn't bother with shared hosting and will turn towards a dedicated server.
If I indeed decide to go for shared hosting then there are a couple of things I need,
1. IPTables for administrative panels if possible even VPN
2. Sub-accounts for my admins
3. 2FA for the administrative panels
Though most hosts don't support #1, therefore a VPS or dedi is better.
I always find a custom jar, java flags, and java version selection to be a plus as different sysadmins use different settings based on server specs.
For a group of friends, I would just go for the cheapest again or if we want something stronger like mod packs use a shared hosting's premium option.
Checking reviews of a hosting provider is a bit useless. Usually, people that have a good experience with a hosting provider, tend to not post a review. Only when something goes wrong (something that is 9 out of 10 times the fault of the customers), they will write a review blaming the customer service for something they didn't even do.
Honestly, when I look at a hosting provider, I look at two things: pricing and the things you get in return. When it comes down to stability, you have to kind of experience that by yourself. A company might have been incredibly stable the past few years but randomly become unstable (think about the recent incident in Strasbourg with OVH). Stability in the tech-industry is something one can hardly guarantee, as there are millions of parameters coming into play when it comes down to stability.
However, when something goes wrong, it's also important to see how the company handles it. If they handle it poorly, blame something else for it, don't take responsibility, etc. you'll have to look for another company.
TL;DR it's really up to you. You know what you're expecting and the only way to actually know if a company will give you what you expect, is to give them a chance. If you don't have a huge budget, first try going with lower-priced servers and eventually upgrade if you think that they are a good partner. You can also apply for a refund (depending on their terms of service and laws in your country). One thing you should look at however, are the responses of the company on the reviews. They can be vital to understand why someone posted a bad review and how the company handles it. That way, reviews may still be somewhat relevant.
If i search a hosting service i primarily look if its trusted or not. It should be a well-established business with cheap and fast servers. Something like an imprint would also be good, because you want to see who's behind the hosting service.
Owned hardware/infrastructure, experience, support, SLA's, something unique to them (whether it be pricing, location, service offerings, etc.) Trial plans are nice! Public benchmark results are good too - transparency is a big thing.
I think owned hardware is one of the biggest items. Anyone can go buy an OVH bare metal box and throw Minecraft servers on it. It takes dedication and experience to maintain infrastructure, from compute & networking to the software stack.
