Doesn't have to be completely custom or unique, but something to differentiate from most of the other server, doesn't need to exclusive to yours.

Maybe generators? or something, I'm not sure you'd have to think of some yourself.

If you want to have a 100 playerbase server, you need to know how to advertise. Not doing so already puts you at a disadvantage. What many people fail to realize is that your server doesn't have to be the most unique and diverse it just has to have loads of people on and competition.

so what server type would you recommend for me to start if I don't want to spend all of my time creating the sever?

I have to agree and disagree. There's two options when making a minecraft server.

Either you have exclusive/custom features that makes you stand out and attracts users. (slow process)

or you have a generic server but spend thousands on advertisement, in which case you will get players.

Don't get me wrong, having unique and cool features is great. But it's not main thing. One thing that is essential in gaining a ton of players is having pvp. I would also recommend you have the mentality that everything that everyone tells you is flawed and figure out ways to improve it. Treat everything that everyone tells you like a grain of salt. If you think of a way to do something better for cheaper do it. Look at servers that have failed and succeeded maybe that may give you some ideas.

If you had an airplane that flies trough skylands world to your house that has real furniture and it is all in minecraft

Not to mention, to having a successful server network, you have to be a "good owner".

By a "good owner" I mean, not being 5 years old, and understanding that you have to be mature. Understanding what your players want, understanding how "it" works.

I put $400 AU into my first ever server and was profited with a return of $750 AU.
I put the $400 AU into advertising, graphics, mostly premium but some custom plugins and a manager (that was a complete idiot and wasted majority of my money).​

try not to get a 12 year old as a server manager next time because the money... its just gonna be spend on lego :/

The manager probably spent it on lego but he wasn't 12, he was actually 16 and seemed very reliable at the time.
