My last server i put $500 into it and made $1500usd back in 3 months. I could of easily put only $300-$400 into it but i was lazy so i paid all my staff to do the configs ect. but if you have a good server with 100+ people you could earn around 2-3k a month.

I do agree that a PVP style server has the most potential at being popular and ranking in money, if that's your thing. Take a look at the most popular servers and you'll likely see that trend.

Custom plugins are great, but like mentioned, they aren't essential. If you have a great setup that pays attention to detail, you'll succeed just fine. Another thing to great success? Advertise in the right time and in the right mindset. Don't throw a wad at a slot with a half-finished server. Running a server or network is different than it was 5 years ago when I first started.

Go big or go home. If you have little cash flow, then don't attempt to start a server. Why?
  • Graphics ($50 - $500)
  • Builds ($200 - $1500)
  • Development ($500 - $10000)
  • Advertisement ($1000 - $20000)
The values are stretched, but generally what you'd expect. $20,000 for advertisement is what I've seen paid out before, along with $10,000 development over the course of a half year or so. Want a really "first-time" figure? Go with the low numbers. Invest big and you'll generally get big return.

I agree with Realm, you don't have to have a full custom everything server. You do have to but time and effort into though. Don't expect to make a server on a $15 budget in 3 days. If you work hard enough and find the best deals you can create a very successful server!

100+???!?!!?!?! You see i have this question since where I live in lithuania people don't even have paypal they are paying trought sms, I know a server owner that has 150 players and he did not earn 100$ a month
braliukas, greetings from Latvia!
You can make server not for lithuanian players, but for Europe or America players.
In Latvia we have the same problem that all donations mostly go through the sms and 60 % will get operator, 10 % goes to company from what are you using this services. So 30 % from total remain itself. We have one server in Latvia which are using these buycraft as an payment gateway which requires paypal and it's going really well. Can get up to 100 euros per month, but for such as small country the playerbase are small and all players most likely are under 16 and not that rich so...
Good luck with creating the server!
