What happened to good Old Prison / SB Servers?

So I recently, I posted a thread offering Free Configurating Services. I bumped it every day and quite a few people wanted me to help them configure their server. But the thing is: They are all doing SMP / Survival Server with basically the same thing. A survival world, sometimes kingdoms, Dungeons and that's it. I mean, there's nothing wrong with it, but what happened to the good old Prison or Skyblock Server? A few months ago it felt like everyone was doing an sb or prison server, now everything is getting flooded with Survival and "LifestealSMP"

Am I the only one that noticed that?

Prison, Skyblock, and SMPs are all still popular. A lot of people base their server off what will get the most joins (of course.) which in this case is the Survival Multiplayer, Lifesteal stuff. This is because they're super popular in this era of Minecraft, Dream SMP and other YouTubers have set off a thrive to play survival Minecraft again.

A couple of months ago, the go-to was One-block, Earth SMP etc. Prison and Skyblock are fun but not new? People like new concepts, Prisons, and Skyblock will always have a fanbase and player base however they are just old, there are really no new iterations and concepts in these spaces, the majority of servers are the same copy-paste of MC-Hub or an older style of those game-modes.

Not to mention, SMP and Lifesteal are all easy to create content for on Tiktok and stuff, and TikTok is the easiest and quickest way to gain and grow a server these days, and there are much more content opportunities on an SMP, Lifesteal, etc than a Prisons and a Skyblock. Since they stick pretty closely to the base game it makes it easier for new eyes to understand the game mode. In turn grows the server without limits, which in turn convinces others to create the same style of server.

In short, we will always have surges of popular game modes, just right now it's the SMP stage, and in a couple of months, we will see another game mode take over. It's all part of the system we all partake in.

Interesting... But yeah, you're right... There are no new concepts. I mean, I've been browsing through server lists: everything is "Survival LifestealSMP" and it's literally all the same. We need some innovative servers again! haha

There are people who innovate, and there are people who have the BEST ideas for their servers, they implement them. The Server just never makes it to be a big name. That's due to a lot of reasons mind.

It's also likely that some server owners don't want to innovate, they're fueled by money, which is the case in most servers. They shut the server down when it makes no more cash, and open up another server using the popular game mode at that time.

There are people who innovate, and there are people who have the BEST ideas for their servers, they implement them. The Server just never makes it to be a big name. That's due to a lot of reasons mind.

It's also likely that some server owners don't want to innovate, they're fueled by money, which is the case in most servers. They shut the server down when it makes no more cash, and open up another server using the popular game mode at that time.

I saw a video on youtube a few days ago. "Is Hypixel bad for Minecraft"? Of course, the title is a bit clickbait, but he was talking about the impact of hypixel and other popular on other servers. As you said before, most prison servers copy mchub and there are a ton of hypixel copies out there. I sometimes wish there would be a way to give the innovative servers more attention. And about the money fuel part: I think at one point, the server owners don't want to keep on spending money for a low player base. I mean, no donations usually mean no players. So I guess that's relatable

I don't think Hypixel is bad for Minecraft as a whole. I mean most of these high-ranking servers are high-ranking for a reason, they innovate, MC-Hub just released a whole Pixelmon server without even having to download a mod pack, it's all resource pack and custom plugins. That's AWESOME! I am sure they're not the first to do it, I am unaware if any other server has done it before them. I just think people need to push the boundaries as well as keep it true to the game mode they've chosen to produce.

And of course, it's a cycle, Players = Money. Money = More features, Advertising = more money.

Yeah... Skyblock is insane! And I'm a huge fan of MCHub. They just make great updates. But I think even MCHub wouldn't be as popular without f1nn5ter and his videos. I am also a huge fan of AkumaMC and the Owner "meed". As far as I know, he's 16 or 17 and he built an insane Minecraft Server. That's not easy, I have a ton of respect for him

The key is the pay attention to what goes viral on YouTube.

The “Minecraft but” phenomenon spawned a lot of new concepts that weren’t previously seen before. This created a gold mine for entrepreneurial server owners seeking new trends and fresh concepts they could capitalize on to bring new players to their server.

TikTok came along, and change the game forever. If a server owner wanted people to play on their server, they could now make a bunch of TikToks and players would start rolling in. Then, of course, everybody starts copying them and the space becomes ridiculously saturated.

I am a big fan of sky block and I have been playing that game mode when it was just a map. However most of those server are staying at 1.8.9 and that version is slowly dying out.

I believe the reason is due to them being easier to setup and maintain. Also these days there are a lot of YouTubers who have their own SMP servers and the viewers want to copy what their favour YouTuber is doing / playing.

People do what's best to get players to join because hypothetically the more players that are on; the more chance you have that one donates & helps fund the server further. Generic LifeSteal SMP (the ones that are the exact same as all the other ones) are super easy to setup and you could probably buy a $10 premade and get by with just that.

Prison & Skyblock are servers are harder to get players on as most of them are on 1.8,9 and versions from years ago that a lot of new players have never even loaded before. & as mentioned above, a lot of the youtubers that used to play skyblock & prison & get paid to upload it are now making their own SMP servers due to the fact that they can make a lot of money & grow on social media with them.
