What happened to Permissions EX

I have been using PEX for a long time now, and now the download says it is no longer being updated and to use luckperms, and I just wondered if anyone knew why it was abandoned.

As mentioned, the developers are working on a new version, although the last commit was August 27th: https://github.com/PEXPlugins/PermissionsEx/commits/master
Unfortunately there is no known release date for the new version so for now LuckPerms is recommended as an alternative.
