What is a vouch copy.

I am fairly new to the website. I have seen a lot of people asking for vouch copies on most things. From what I have grasped is that if you ask for a vouch copy you get whatever they are offering for free in return for a vouch. Not sure if this is correct but if someone could explain it to me then that would be cool.
