Shared Hosting - Usually cPanel (or some other control panel software) for websites and databases, or for Minecraft it would be Multicraft, McMyAddmin, etc., all on one machine pooling resources, typically with no priority and tend to be oversold for resources available.

VPS (Virtual Private Server) - Similar to above, except instead of just offering website space, you get a fully functioning operating system in a virtual "container" that is house along with others on on physical server (called a node). Think of a physical server, but set up like an apartment building. The physical server is a dwelling itself, but there are many separate and fully functional dwellings contained within. They are assigned a share of the resources the physical machine has to offer, and may or may not be setup to run slightly beyond those setting as a "grace". Still subject to having the node's resources oversold.

Dedicated Server - You are the only tenant of the machine. You have full access to the machine and all it's resources with no limitations. The only thing you share is the network connection.

Bottom line - Resources is the main difference.

Hopefully that all makes sense :)

Hello,

I wrote this in terms of using it and not what it actually means like the above comment.

Website Hosting:

Shared:
Normally shared website hosting is what people use, it's pretty cheap and you get a lot of benefits such as, cPanel, online support, ddos protection and even sometimes a free domain and SSL.

VPS:
This is normally what a server with more traffic or resource heavy websites use, it's more pricey and you don't get the free cPanel or domain with it. Also you would need to setup everything yourself. Although this is better than shared you still share it with other people but instead you own part of the server so they can still affect you if someone else gets attacked on the VPS.

Dedicated:
Same as the VPS but instead it's 100% your server so no one else will effect you.

Server Hosting:

Shared:
This is when you buy GB from McProhosting or a company alike, it's really what you should start on if you want to save money. Also if you need support then you get this because your buying from a company with specializes in Minecraft hosting.

VPS:
This is when you buy a server but again you need to set everything up (Install OS, securing etc) you need to know linux. I suggest one of these over shared if you know a little about Linux or even have $20-30 for someone else to set it up. It will perform better in the long run.

Dedicated:
The so called beast of hosting, you hear a lot about dedicated servers although you got to take into account a few issues. A dedicated is only good if you have aa decent budget $40 - 100 because you need the CPU to still be able to handle your server although I highly suggest a dedicated again you will need to know some Linux or have some money to spend on someone else setting it up.

Kind regards,
Jamie J M

I can explain in a much easier way:
Shared hosting - like a car from the 80th
VPS - like a BMW
dedicated servers - like a Ferrari

Pfft because that would help someone who knows nothing about hosting. It's too simple.

It depends on the host. Sometimes the host will forcefully kill the server because of the traffic, if you don't have any protection layers.
