For me it would have been my Irish teachers telling us there is no word for "yes" in Irish.
I later found out this isn't true because I was dating a girl who lives farther South in Ireland than I do, she told me the word is "Tá" which is correct because the next teacher I had also told us this then he himself found out our previous teachers were lying to us so as they could get us to say full sentences.
I.E.
Do you like shopping = An maith leat siopadóireacht
We would have to say "Is maith liom siopadóireacht."
instead of saying "Tá".
