Hey! to start of with, sorry about the language in this thread, it's probably not exciting as to be honest it feels like i'm writing to a brick wall, anyways I want to learn more around the minecraft community, and what you find fun / exciting in an SMP and what would make you stay on one and how a server could stand out. Any tips / advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

No matter what gamemode your server runs, a lot of players would want to stick around if the playerbase is friendly and fun. Back then I wasn't that much of an SMP type of person but this one SMP server had a pretty nice playerbase so I played on it for like a year or so.

Completely agree with ^^.

To run a successful minecraft server you'd want to put a lot of effort & thought into the server. An SMP is a hard server to make nowadays because it's becoming a very popular game mode thanks to Dream & Tommy etc.

A playerbase is a good way to maintain a server but getting a playerbase is a hard matter in itself. I don't know much about SMP's cause I've never really be interested in Survival but my piece of advice would be that you just need to keep moving forward.

Because you're a smaller server that is just starting out a small majority of people will take advantage of that and ask you for things such as: staff or giveaways etc.

Now, that might seem like a good idea because it'll keep them around but it'll just piss everyone else off. Stick to your grounds and follow your server rules; if a small majority of people leave your server because they don't like it then that's fine; that happens with every server.

I wish you the best of luck with your server, you can DM me on here if you need and advice/help with anything <3

Thanks! the last smp i ran was back in 1.4.2 which was a lot different to now, as players choices have seemed to change, I guess i'll go looking around for stuff.

It's hard to get a SMP rolling these days tbh. I would especially make sure to figure out what audience you're targeting and then tweak the SMP accordingly.
If you're creating a server for veteran hardcore minecraft players, then find ways to make it difficult. More difficult than what vanilla minecraft can do, so it feels like an accomplishment for your users.

In my case, we had a super mixed playerbase. Some primary schoolers, some parents, but also everything in between. Barely any experienced / competitive players tho. So I made a plugin that made certain parts of the game more enjoyable for casual players: Shorter nights, you don't drop your tools/weapons/armor when you die, etc...

It's all about adjusting to your audience and make playing on your server a tiny bit better than on others. But most importantly: Keep them motivated and make sure they bring their friends.

I think something that is heavily over looked when running an SMP server especially is the staff team. You only need one mistake and you set the whole playerbase off on a hate tangent against the server. You really need friendly and easy going staff that are able to punish efficiently and effectively.

Another important thing is make sure you have something that makes you unique. If you're just a basic SMP server why would anyone join that server over a more popular server, this is super important for starting out. It does not even have to be something super challenging, just something simple like editing mobs behaviour, adding a custom dungeon system etc. If you don't have something that makes you stand out you will find it hard but it's important that it's something you think will make your server succeed. You have to get a little bit creative with it, draw from things you've found fun.

I hope this provides a little bit of help and wish you all the best with the project.
