how about some custom trees. that alone could make this so much better, custom trees on the edges and in the 4 squares

Add something that breaks up the semetric feel it has, I would recommend either some statues, ruins, or custom trees as Ivain suggested. Also try mixing some ferns and tall grass/flowers to the sides of the road. Perhaps play around with a design for the spawning platform so it's not a solid cobble and stonebrick slab structure (somewhat the reason I recommend adding ruins to the sides). I really like the way your flags are done, and would appreciate an update as you progress with your build as it seems to have quite a bit more depth and well planned out, which is a good thing.
