What version should I make my Factions server?

I am opening a Factions server sometime in May and I'm struggling to decide if we should go with 1.8 or use a new version, but use the old combat system.

The main things that I'm worried about is combat (we want old combat).

My question is: Is it worth using a combat plugin to bring in old combat on a newer version of Minecraft or should we revert to 1.8 or any of the versions that have the old combat system.

Also, what are the other drawbacks to doing either option (examples: missing out on newer items)

High performance, consistent uptime and fast support. Minecraft hosting that just works.

I would definitely use 1.8 - thats what the majority of factions players user, and you can use a plugin called ViaVersion, which lets your server run on 1.8 but allows players from versions up to 1.15.2 to join the server, so you don't miss out on players.

I understand that, but wouldn't certain plugins break on 1.8? Also, I would be missing out on the newer blocks and stuff.

I have heard that old combat plugins aren't as good as the actual old combat system itself. Can you comment on that?[DOUBLEPOST=1587218494][/DOUBLEPOST]

That's one of my main concerns as well :(

Personally I've found no issues with old combat plugins, have worked fine for me but I have only used them in a less PvP-based environment.

Also, yes you may not be able to use some plugins, but lots of plugins, if not more, are compatible with 1.8.

I think it depends on the market of players you are aiming for - if its for the more casual minecraft players, you should probably stay on the latest version to give them all the features they need. However, if its focused on PvP-intensive gameplay with that sort of playerbase around it, I would say 1.8 would be a solid choice. And, if you do go with 1.8, people will still be able to join on higher versions if you use ViaVersion.

Factions players aren't looking for modern features in 99% of cases. Go 1.8, it'll make them and their cannons happier.

I forgot to mention that there wouldn't be any building on my factions server, so there wouldn't be any cannons[DOUBLEPOST=1587219238][/DOUBLEPOST]
