For about 3 years I was *very* active in Minecraft server admin/plugin dev/servers. In 2015 I sold my last server, though, and haven't really touched Minecraft since.

So my question: What's changed in the server world since then? Are servers more or less popular? Are they still profitable? Which are still the big gamemodes?: Factions, prison, etc?

Do people still play as much minecraft as they used to? I've always felt like it died out, but maybe the age of the userbase has just skewed younger?

thx

I’d say that the overall quality of servers have gone significantly down these days. Server owners nowadays just want to create networks in order to compete and in doing so have forgone putting effort into each of their individual servers. (Quantity over Quality.)

why is it beneficial to have networks?

Does more servers = more players though? seems like it'd just be more difficult to market
I feel like server owners that gradually introduce new servers in order to create a network end up being better off than immediately creating a network with 10 different gamemodes and no players to fill them up.

Here's a list:
  • a "new" and "improved" server every week
  • the use of "PVP" in server names has increased
  • developers and builders get "paid" after release
  • less mini-game servers, more skyblock
  • mmorpgs never release and when they do, they flop
