Whats the best way to promote a forum?

Asking as I own a forum myself.

Everything feels useless honestly. I am releasing a new forum that I co own with and I was wondering to plan ahead before it gets released in april.

Any suggestions?

Close friends. I have 1200 Skype contacts, and ever since 2011, i have been able to open a minecraft server or website, and tell all my friends on Skype & Irl, and just by the word of mouth, (maybe some other web advertising) it usually picks up. It also really helps to motivate some of your friends who do join the forum that they are able to help. If they feel they are truly apart of the forum, they set it as an objective themselves to fill it up, thus they start advertising as well. Just my personal input. Not saying this is the best way, its just my preferred way.
