I've always owned 1.8 servers, never gone above that. What version, in your opinion, is the best to both play on as a player and best to create on as a server owner?
All I've heard is that 1.13 has some chunk loading issues, not sure if that's correct though

PebbleHost
High performance, consistent uptime and fast support. Minecraft hosting that just works.

i think it depends on what type of server u gonna make.
Combat/PvP server are mainly 1.7 - 1.8 because of combat mechanics (jitterclick, no cooldowns and other things) and survival server more like 1.15 or newer versions.
I dont really know about the performance of each version so cant talk about that.
just my opinion, maybe wrong.

For conversation purposes, lets use modern skyblock as an example[DOUBLEPOST=1577501298][/DOUBLEPOST]

I know that the pvp on 1.8.9 and below is preferred by a large part of the community but if the game modes focus isn't on pvp, should the extra features that the new versions add more than make up for the pvp change?

Use a version which all of your plugins that you plan on using support and from there you can use ViaVersion and ViaBackwards to support most versions. Atm I think the most stable version is 1.14.4. Might be 1.15 but not all plugins support 1.15 yet
while yes, you can support other versions, the server has to be based on one version. all the versions below this won't have access to all the blocks which makes the blocks hard to use without forcing people to play on the native version.

Skyblock is typically a 1.8.8 version server, it would be super cool to see someone make a 1.14.4 Skyblock server correctly though. Havent seen ANY good ones! Best of luck <3

Depends on what u want too, think pvp players doesn't like new versions because it changed a lot compared to 1.7 or 1.8 adding new combat mechanics and items that they don't like at all (some people just doesn't like changes). I think newer version are better even for pvp, it adds a lot of new features that can make the game more exciting, survival server in 1.15 seems to be really fun and modern skyblock servers too.

U can make the server 1.8 and depending on the gamemode force a different version.
Lobbies 1.8 -> 1.15 , ArenaPvP 1.8.9 , Survival 1.15 (if they are not using 1.15 then they can join the server and still on lobby).
Sorry if my answer is not that clean, my english is really basic but i think u can understand what im trying to do.

I understand what you mean. me personally enjoy the later version more seeing as Im not much of a pvper and much more prefer building and such. 1.14 seems quite good but as Huffleman points out, it might not be stable enough for a server. I remember having some issues making a plugin on there for a client.[DOUBLEPOST=1577502849][/DOUBLEPOST]
As I have heard, 1.14.4 is not stable for a server. Though, I have always done 1.14.4 as I do survival servers.

Never done 1.15, but will in the future, mainly because it was just released...
I've always done my servers with quite a lot of altering to gameplay so i need the version to be server stable, would you say 1.13 is more stable?

In my opinion and what I have seen. 1.14.4 is not very good for a server, there are a lot of bugs not being fixed. The performance isn't the best tbh, you have a huge community for a 1.14.4 server if you're doing survival though. If you want a skyblock server or factions, stick to 1.12.2 or lower.

The way villagers work in the new update is very laggy, the raids are terrible with performance. The pillager outposts are broken on servers lol and spawn too many UGH, and then bees... anyways, if you are doing a server stick to like 1.13.2 or lower or just do 1.14.4 if you really need new blocks and stuff. Just be prepared to tackle a lot and spend more time fixing stuff that is unfixable. Also, 1.14.4 and higher requires more cpu imo, get a dedicated or vps or something.
alright thank you! I'll keep all of these things in mind.

I'll be heading off the site for the night now. feel free to keep discussing the subject on the thread but I won't be replying for another 10ish hours or so. Night everyone

Many big servers are on 1.7 or 1.8 like hypixel and mineplex, but a lot of servers run 1.12.2 because it's not that outdated and the performance is way better than 1.13+. It's really your choice
