Truth is no one really knows, best reply you will get is a barely educated guess. It can take anytime from 1-6 month, even more. Everything at this point are guesses based on incomplete facts and there is a million factors that we still don't know.

I think it'll probably happen within our life times.

There's actually proof that came out that the virus was actually created here in the United States in University of North Carolina. The lead researcher eventually went back to Wuhan, China where the outbreak occurred.

Even so, it's going to continue because you're gonna have that one idiot that stays inside in the A/C and manages to contain it for the 3/4 months of summer.

slightly longer answer: large % of population will be infected because its an extremely contagious virus with no vaccine. There are already people who will refuse (by their own admission) taking the vaccine because MuH ConSpIrAcY. It will take years for the virus to run its course, likely a year or two for a vaccine, but due to antivaxer idiots it will never fully disappear, just like measles.
