I've found that class is key. When going on a first date, do something you are comfortable with. I suggest going to a restaurant you've been to before, high end, and has a good location, that way once you finish dinner you can go for a walk to see whatever is close by. Preferably a park or waterfront as then you can talk. Never go to a tourist trap area too.
