Which Type of Server Should I Make?

Hey it's me again.

I am just looking for some input on what server I should make (for my first server). I have some ideas, but I just want to get the community's input. I'm thinking either Skyblock or Factions (with a twist, obviously), but I don't want to make a saturated gamemode. What are people enjoying currently, and what would really get a playerbase?

Choosing the right type of server is hard, if you want to get popular as you said you need something with a twist, I'd say Skyblock is the best type of server to go with to start. I myself currently own an OP Prison server, and getting players through getting unique features not seen on other servers before.

Thanks for the input mate! Yeah I am thinking Skyblock is the way forward here. I am quite creative so thinking of new things shouldn't be a problem. There are a few tips I can share with you, some people may find them useful some may not. I found these quite helpful when I first started my server.

1) Advertising: Try all types of advertising (non paid AND paid), this is the biggest way of getting players onto your server, a good way is to setup votifier - most server websites have this and it helps in getting players. Another good way is on social media, and also getting YouTubers to advertise your server on theiR channel. Offer something to them such as money, or perks on the server!

2) Staff: When you first start your server - even when you are still working on it. You want to get builders, co-owners, developers, moderators etc. Get good experienced staff, not youngsters off of planet minecraft who could possibly grief your server if they get the chance.

3) Money: Yeah you need a lot of money for a minecraft server, you need to think of staff you would be paying, any advertising you’re doing. Make sure you have a big budget that you need to stick to.

4) Host: this is self explanatory. Get a good host which has good reputations, I currently use Nitrous Networks, and I couldn’t get anything better. It’s cheap, a lot of Ram and no lag whatsoever, players like a server with no lag.

Last tip which is big, don’t expect the players to come quickly, it takes a lot of time, effort and money to get them. Getting players is the hardest part of owning a server.

You can do whatever you feel like would do better for your server the hardest part is getting people to join your server and keeping the community alive! GL man!

It's kind of sad these days. In all honesty, you can do any type you want, you'd just have to do it right. Personally, I'd prefer to play CosmicPrisons (Custom coded prison server) over an every day Skyblock server, yet I'd rather play Skybounds (Custom coded Skyblock server) than a normal prison server. As long as you do what you're choosing to do right, the server will perform. And yeah, the sad part is, your server may be great and incredibly custom, but these days you mainly just need a good advertising strategy/YouTubers, it really will affect how your server turns out.

Yeah I totally get where you're coming from. Hopefully the idea I've decided to go with will be unique enough to attract a playerbase without any large-scale advertising, although this is something I'm going to do down the line anyway.
