From my research, dark theme is only easier on the eyes and our brains prefer reading bright text on dark backgrounds.
But yes, having dark theme at daytime is unnatural lighting and can damage your eyes.

Personally speaking, my eyes have astigmatism and just being in normal room light causes immense strain for some reason. I highly doubt that most of us are using our electronics in extremely bright environments for a majority of the time as well. They are no way "harmful" for shit.

I have everything on dark theme except few applications on my phone which have no. I never understood why people hate light theme so much but we can all agree that using an application on light theme for a longer period of time is just not good for your eyes.

I mean, you realize the cost of printing a white on black book is much more expensive than normal standards. And if you look, you'll notice that most pages have a yellow tint to them. You should also read my other message, literally right above yours. It's not incorrect, dark themes are beneficial in low light environments, light themes are beneficial in bright environments. Dark themes are also better for my eyes since standard light gives me a headache.
