In my opinion, no matter what gamemode you go for, it won't matter if the answer to your first question is "no", in the sense that you don't have enough time and motivation to spend. The most popular gamemodes right now are Earth, SMP, Lifesteal, and Oneblock. However, with popularity comes saturation and a lot of competition.
The joke is that it only took 6 months for the genre to become obliterated with identical clones.
