First off, go on DivineFreebuild to have access to WE and VS both, unless you already have a server that allows you to do it.
Second, you'll barely use WE for anything other than terrain coloring.

Now, the real thing begins.
Use basic shapes to shape the terrain. Start with spheres:
  • /b b (brush ball) + /b 10 (brush 10) + /v 1 (voxeltype stone)
  • use the arrow and/or gunpowder to spread them around. Make a bowl shape.
  • now use /b e melt, /b e fill and /b bb (brush erode melt, fill and blendball respectively) to merge the spheres together.
  • When you're done, select the whole thing and do //naturalize. basic terrain is done.

Now experiment with different overall shapes, find which work and look good.

I already taught him it's fine.

What Ivain said.
You can additionally use WE to give your terrain color by either marking the whole region and use the "//replace XX%block1,XX%block2..." Command to give it some basic texture. There are better (not easier) was to do this though.

By using naturaliue you can also only repmace certain blocks to give it a more realistic look. You should also keep in mind that "/naturalize" will not change blocks under the surface so if your terrain has lots of ledges you might want to add grass manually.
