With Xenforo does anyone actually buy the license to just test with? I'm interested in learning to use it and make some themes etc. Any advice would help, thanks!

I strongly go against using a cracked version of xenforo no matter the reason. Even if it's not based for consumer level stuff, you're still putting yourself at risk of viruses and malware. Use the trial for practice and also, there's some cheap xenforo license being sold here. Have a look at those people selling them. I most likely won't buy a xenforo license from MCM cause I don't want to deal with a scam report if anything goes wrong but up to you. I rather just buy the license from the xenforo themselves.

Yeah, pirating a license just never ends well. I'll likely buy a legit license from here from a trusted member. If I do eventually make some money, i'll buy a full license from the website to support the developers of XenForo.

I have recently purchased a license to just test with it, overall it's a really good forum base platform. Very impressed with it so far, so many decent addons that are useful to what i need to do. It's worth the price as th license is for life, obvioisly make sure your web hosting is compatible with xenforo before purchase.
