Optimizing the YouTube Algorithm: Gaining the Most Traction on Your Channel

YouTube is a network to a billion users on the internet, and serves as a creator studio for many people. Today I will provide personal insight into the optimization of YouTube’s algorithm.

A few years ago, YouTube changed its policy on SEO and channel relevance. It diverted its attention from view metric to raw view time. Meaning that your channel isn’t rated based upon your subscribers, comments, or likes, but is rated upon how long a user watches your videos for. Frustrating as it seems, a 10-minute low-quality video will give you more interaction that a 3-minute high-quality video, assuming that the user watches both for the full length of the videos.

YouTube doesn’t really care about people watching your videos and enjoying your content. In turn, they just want people to spend more time on their website and watch it like a TV. This can be proven through the introduction of YouTube Red and other “TV Show” like references being produced by big content creators.

So how exactly do you take advantage of this?

Create a compelling thumbnail: By creating an appealing thumbnail, users are more likely to click on your video and watch it. As bad as they sound, clickbait thumbnails are able to generate so many views because they utilize what a user is looking for.

Have a hook in your intro: Numerous large creators have a great ‘hook’ as their introduction, allowing them to grasp their audiences for longer amounts of time. Often times, giveaways will be mentioned in the beginning, and discussed more throughout the video. A good example of a content creator that uses this to her advantage is Liza Koshy (funny intros which grasp the audience’s attention).

Utilize your title and keywords: Be sure to use generic keywords in your title and tags, and avoid unnecessary words that distract the user. By using generic words, you may attract users that could be searching for something completely unrelated to your video.

Keep your audience engaged: Throughout your video, be sure to demonstrate the benefits of watching the video and subscribing to the channel. Uploading useless trailers that generate no views isn’t as important as uploading a funny montage of pvp fails that people actually watch.

Understand YouTube Analytics: Often times, YouTube Analytics can provide helpful feedback about your channel. Take advantage of this and implement new changes that can bring more views to your subscribers and viewers.
